The neighborhood does not currently have an adequate playground. Presently, there is antiquated equipment located at the corner of Lakeview and S. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue.

THE ACTIVITY

Build a state-of-the-art, accessible playground in front of the recreation center where it is well lit and easily supervised. Build community pride and relationships through accomplishing this task with volunteers. All ages welcome, but you must be 16 years of age or older to participate in construction activities. Younger teens are welcome to assist with food, children’s games and activities or community clean up. Games, activities and pool time available for the littlest helpers.

THE LOCATION

The playground will be installed in front of the Ross Norton Recreation & Aquatic Complex located south of Lakeview on S. Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue (formerly South Greenwood).

Ross Norton is conveniently located in the center of Clearwater, Florida. The park contains a recreation complex (opened in 2005) complete with an aquatic complex, skate park, teen lounge, gymnasium and state-of-the-art fitness center. The outdoor park amenities include athletic fields, a beautiful lake (Lake Belleview), sidewalks, the Clearwater Historical Society and shuffleboard courts.

THE DEDICATION

The Playground will be dedicated to Arturo Huerta-Cruz, who died serving his country in Iraq on April 14, 2008. He is the only solider that Clearwater has lost in Iraq. Mr. Huerta-Cruz received a Purple Heart, Army Achievement Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

CONTESTS AND PRIZES

Groups:
The group or organization that has the most volunteer hours during the day will receive their choice of the following:

  • A free four-hour Multi purpose room rental including use of the room, tables and chairs (value $400) and pizza for up to 25 people.
  • A free private three-hour pool party including the use of the activity pool, plunge pool and lifeguards (value $300) and pizza for up to 25 people.

Individuals:
Each individual that brings at least 15 volunteers will receive a gift certificate for a Clearwater Parks and Recreation Play Pass; good for one year from the redemption date. The Pass provides access to open gym time, the extreme skate park, swimming pools and fitness centers at all Clearwater Parks and Recreation facilities. (value $100)

(Play Pass holders also receive a 25% discount on all classes and programs offered at these facilities. Note: Play Pass must be valid for the entire program in order to receive discounts.)

Registration begins at 8:00am with complementary breakfast (coffee, juice, fruit, pastries). Please check the activities and time frames that interest you.
